BEIJING -- A recent survey by China Youth Daily found that about 58 percent of college students spend more than five hours a day on their mobile phones, and among them, 24.75 percent use their phones more than eight hours a day.

Nearly 63 percent of the respondents said they overly rely on mobile phones, according to the survey which pooled 2,077 college and university students across China.

Chen Siting, a sophomore at a university in eastern China's Fujian province, said she spends too much time on her mobile phone.

"As a member of a student club, I have to deal with tasks via my mobile phone, which has forced me to check my phone frequently," she said.

The survey also noted over 70 percent of those surveyed said they once tried to reduce reliance on mobile phones.

"Staying away from my mobile phone can significantly improve my study efficiency," said Zhang Yuan from eastern China's Zhejiang province.

"Therefore, I left my phone at the dormitory when studying at the library," Zhang added.

Liu Yuming, a college student in Shanghai, chose to use an application to manage the time he spends on his phone. The application has helped him limit the time he spends on his phone.

Zhao Xiuping, a psychological counselor in eastern China's Shandong province, pointed out that the major reasons for the reliance on mobile phones can be attributed to mental vacancy, weak self-control and social anxiety.

Zhao also said that making arrangements and plans in advance and firmly implement them will help people use mobile phones rationally.
